Programme:

Leeds were well beaten in the Final at Landsdowne Road, Dublin. Leeds had had a tough encounter with Lazio, whereas Liverpool had had an easy game with St Patrick's Athletic, and their freshness was apparent. After a goalless first half Liverpool struck twice in a minute as Patrik Berger got the first in the fifty-fifth minute and Michael Owen finished them off with another a minute later. United replaced Ian Harte with Bruno Ribeiro, Gunnar Halle with Gary Kelly, Lee Bowyer with David Hopkin and Stephen McPhail was replaced by Danny Granville at Half-Time. Liverpool had replaced Karl-Heinz Riedle with Patrick Berger at the start of the second half and after sixty eight minutes they brought on David Thompson for Paul Ince and Danny Murphy for Steve McManaman. They made their final change eight minutes later when Sean Dundee replaced Michael Owen, leaving David James, Bjorn Tore Kvarme, Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Oyvind Leonhardsen and Steve Staunton unused on the bench. (Thanks to Steve Bell for Liverpool team details) On 1st August 1998 Lazio had easily disposed of St.Patrick's 4-1 in the third place play-off. Stankovic scoring after just nine minutes and Nedved increasing their lead eight minutes later. Lazio made it 3-0 six minutes into the second half through Iannuzzi, before Gilzean reduced the arrears for the home team in the fifty-ninth minute only for Venturin to make it 4-1 seven minutes later.
